Boy Meets World actor Ben Savage has announced that he is running for city council in West Hollywood.
Savage is best known for his role as Cory Matthews on the 90s sitcom.
On his campaign website, Savage says that he has lived in West Hollywood for 18 years and believes that residents deserve “sensible, honest and strong leadership” to tackle the city’s problems.
“In recent years, however, people have become disappointed with the direction the city is heading,” the campaign website states. “Residents and community leaders have expressed frustration with the political divisiveness and loss of a sense of community. People are eager for leaders who can talk to each other, build coalitions, work together on common sense policies and put the interests of the city and residents above their own.”
Savage wrote that “I’m a longtime resident, union member and concerned citizen who believes West Hollywood deserves leaders who will deliver results. The city is facing serious challenges around public safety, struggling businesses, inflation and the cost of housing. We need new leaders with a fresh perspective who are ready to begin tackling these issues.”
“We need to restore faith in city government by offering reasonable, innovative and compassionate solutions to the city’s most pressing issues. We need to increase and expand access to all the great opportunities West Hollywood affords, by ensuring that every member of the community has the tools they need to succeed,” Savage continued.
Under the “priorities” tab of website, Savage wrote that he looks “forward to raising a family in this historic community where diversity and differences are valued and celebrated.”
He claimed that he is not part of the “political machine” and has a strong focus on community safety — including support for law enforcement.
“WeHo needs to support its law enforcement officers, providing them with all the resources they need to keep businesses, tourists and residents safe,” Savage wrote. “Public safety also means increased funding for community safety partners including Block by Block ambassadors, MET teams, health services and clinical case workers.”
His site also says that he wants to support “renters rights” to fight homelessness by keeping people off of the streets.
It is unclear what political party Savage belongs to, but The Hill reports that “Savage reportedly has some prior experience in the political realm, as he interned for former Sen. Arlen Specter (D) of Pennsylvania in 2003 while studying political science at Stanford University.”
