A woman has been arrested trying to cross into Canada after fleeing Washington, where she and her husband attempted an “honor killing” of their 17-year-old daughter.
Zahraa Subhi Mohsin Ali, 40, and her husband Ihsan Ali, 44, have been charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, and assault over the attack on their teenage daughter on October 18.
The girl had attempted to run away to Timberline High School in Lacey, Washington after her parents tried to put her on a flight to Iraq.
“Her father had recently been threatening her with honor killing for refusing an arranged marriage with an older man in another country,” according to court documents obtained by the Daily Mail.
A video of the attempted murder showed the father putting her in a chokehold outside the school while her classmates frantically tried to save her.

“After they fought him off, Zahraa allegedly tried to finish the job but was stopped by the girl’s 16-year-old boyfriend and classmates,” the Daily Mail reports. “Ihsan was arrested on the spot, but Zahraa was free for another four days until she was detained by customs officers trying to cross into Canada.”
The father of the girl’s boyfriend, Victor Barnes, told Fox 13, “The girl’s parents were looking for her after she ran away to get help. Upon seeing her on October 18, the dad rushed out of a vehicle and yelled at his daughter in what Barnes described as Arabic.”
A student who spoke Arabic told the father to leave.
“The kid said something of the nature of, ‘She doesn’t want to go back with you. Leave her alone.’ Dad snapped,” Barnes said.
The father began hitting his daughter and her boyfriend — who went flying onto the concrete, according to the report.
“Her arms go limp. She’s no longer moving,” Barnes told the station. “He starts to see her eyes roll back, and her arms start flailing and that’s when he sprung into action. Because he didn’t want to see someone he cared about pass away.”
The father was pried off of her, but the mother launched a second attack.
“My son was able to grab her and take her away from mom,” said Barnes.
Barnes told the Daily Mail that the mother had dropped two of her other children, boys aged five and three, off at an uncle’s home in Canada. “From what we know, this uncle is a lot [stricter] than her dad is, as far as what he believes… So prayers up for these kids,” he said.
The mother then returned to Washington and attempted to return to Canada on October 22.
Both parents remain in jail, unable to make bond.
