Mike Johnson doesn’t have the votes to remain Speaker of the House, according to Politio.
With just 24 hours to go until the Speaker vote, Mike Johnson is still working to convince the ‘undecideds’ to support him.
President Trump earlier this week endorsed Mike Johnson for Speaker.
“The American people need IMMEDIATE relief from all of the destructive policies of the last Administration. Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, hard working, religious man. He will do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN. Mike has my Complete & Total Endorsement. MAGA!!!” Trump said in a Truth Social post on Monday ahead of the Speaker vote.
Politico reported:
With less than 24 hours left until the start of the 119th Congress, Mike Johnson doesn’t have the votes yet to remain speaker.
The Louisiana Republican has been working diligently over the past few days to lock down the 218 votes he needs, even after spending the holidays working the phones and meeting with incoming President-elect Donald Trump. But even the incoming president’s repeated endorsement earlier this week doesn’t mean Johnson is guaranteed a victory. Roughly a dozen Republicans are still on the fence, as some of them try to get concessions on the rules or commitments from Johnson on spending.
Mike Johnson responded to a Fox News reporter asking about the undecideds.
“One day before the election why are there still undecideds?” Fox News reporter Aishah Hasnie asked Speaker Johnson on Thursday afternoon.
Johnson appeared optimistic about Friday’s Speaker vote.
“People are talking through process changes they want… and I’m open to that and I think tomorrow’s gonna go well,” Johnson said.
