Elon Musk has revealed what could be the largest financial scandal in American history.
Musk has exposed the Treasury Department’s lax oversight, revealing that over $100 billion annually is being funneled to individuals without traceable Social Security Numbers (SSNs) or identification numbers.
Even more alarming, Musk shared that Treasury staffers estimate at least half of these payments—approximately $50 billion per year or $1 billion per week—to be unequivocally fraudulent.
This announcement comes after a federal judge threw a wrench into Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) crusade against government waste, fraud, and abuse, blocking the team from accessing a critical Treasury Department system.
US District Judge Paul A. Engelmayer, a Barack Obama appointee, cited a risk of “irreparable harm.”
The injunction, which came into effect on Saturday, was pushed by 19 far-left state attorneys general, who apparently prefer maintaining the status quo of unchecked government expenditure over transparency and accountability.
Engelmayer has scheduled a hearing for February 20, leaving DOGE with limited access to data that’s vital for exposing the misuse of taxpayer dollars.

Following Engelmayer’s ruling, Musk took to X, exposing the rampant government incompetence and fraud festering within the Treasury Department.
“Yesterday, I was told that there are currently over $100B/year of entitlements payments to individuals with no SSN or even a temporary ID number. If accurate, this is extremely suspicious,” Musk wrote on X.
He continued, “When I asked if anyone at Treasury had a rough guess for what percentage of that number is unequivocal and obvious fraud, the consensus in the room was about half, so $50B/year or $1B/week!! This is utterly insane and must be addressed immediately.”
Think about that. $1 billion per week—gone. Stolen from American taxpayers, while Judge Engelmayer’s courtroom protects the very system that allowed it to happen.
According to Musk, DOGE investigators discovered that government payments were being made with no proper documentation, no audit trails, and zero accountability.
He wrote:
To be clear, what the DOGE team and US Treasury have jointly agreed makes sense is the following:
– Require that all outgoing government payments have a payment categorization code, which is necessary in order to pass financial audits. This is frequently left blank, making audits almost impossible.
– All payments must also include a rationale for the payment in the comment field, which is currently left blank. Importantly, we are not yet applying ANY judgment to this rationale, but simply requiring that SOME attempt be made to explain the payment more than NOTHING!
– The DO-NOT-PAY list of entities known to be fraudulent or people who are dead or are probable fronts for terrorist organizations or do not match Congressional appropriations must actually be implemented and not ignored. Also, it can currently take up to a year to get on this list, which is far too long. This list should be updated at least weekly, if not daily.
The above super obvious and necessary changes are being implemented by existing, long-time career government employees, not anyone from DOGE. It is ridiculous that these changes didn’t exist already!

According to Musk, the government actively ignored fraud because fraudsters receiving money don’t complain—whereas blocking fraudulent payments would generate backlash from criminals and their enablers.
“Nobody in Treasury management cared enough before. I do want to credit the working level people in Treasury who have wanted to do this for many years, but have been stopped by prior management,” he said.
“Everything at Treasury was geared towards complain minimization. People we receive money don’t complain, but people who don’t receive money (especially fraudsters) complain very loudly, so the fraud was allowed to continue.”

The magnitude of the fraud in government payments (your tax dollars being spent) is MUCH higher than you think! https://t.co/umnT8Zm4Mb
