Colombia is a perfect example of a Latin-American country populated by deeply pro-American citizens who are governed by Marxist, insanely anti-US heads of government.
But, as US President Donald J. Trump pushes those contradictions to the forefront of the political discourse, he puts those ‘leaders’ in very precarious positions.
Take former communist guerrilla fighter and current Colombian President Gustavo Petro, for example.
He picked a fight he couldn’t win against Trump over illegals getting deported back to Colombia, only to see his popularity drop and opposition mobilizing for his impeachment.
After backing down to Trump amid local political turmoil, he had to resort to asking for the resignation of his whole cabinet, trying to reboot the failed experiment.
So, what do you imagine the result of all this will be in his popularity levels?
Latin Times reported:
“Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s handling of a recent diplomatic dispute with U.S. President Donald Trump over deportation flights has drawn widespread domestic disapproval, according to a survey conducted by AtlasIntel for Bloomberg News. In fact, the survey revealed that Trump currently has an 8-point lead over Petro in Colombia when it comes to positive image.
According to the survey, nearly 74% of Colombians disapproved of Petro’s response to the crisis, which began when he blocked U.S. military deportation flights carrying Colombian nationals.”

After Trump threatened with stiff tariffs, he has now received a 50% approval rating among Colombians, surpassing Petro’s 42% approval.
“The tariff threat, while temporarily lifted, remains a significant concern for Colombian businesses, with 88% of Colombians fearing economic repercussions.”
Petro’s declining approval is also due to rampant corruption and endless economic uncertainty.
“The poll also found that 82% of Colombians want Petro to pursue closer ties to Washington, and 70% hold a positive view of the U.S.”
Those levels are 20 points higher than the next most American-friendly Latin-American nation, Brazil.
