Starbucks has announced plans to lay off 1,100 corporate employees as it looks to restructure its operations.

CEO Brian Niccol sent out a letter on Monday revealing employees who have been laid off will be notified on Tuesday.

Niccol stated, “Our intent is to operate more efficiently, increase accountability, reduce complexity, and drive better integration.”

The layoffs will not impact baristas and warehouse staff.

Starbucks has 16,000 corporate employees worldwide.

Per AP:

Starbucks plans to lay off 1,100 corporate employees globally as new Chairman and CEO Brian Niccol streamlines operations.

In a letter to employees released Monday, Niccol said the company will inform employees who are being laid off by mid-day Tuesday. Niccol said Starbucks is also eliminating several hundred open and unfilled positions.

“Our intent is to operate more efficiently, increase accountability, reduce complexity and drive better integration,” Niccol wrote in the letter.

Starbucks has 16,000 corporate support employees worldwide, but that includes some employees who aren’t impacted, like roasting and warehouse staff. Baristas in the company’s stores are not included in the layoffs.

Earlier in the year, Starbucks reversed its open-door policy and now requires people to purchase if they want to sit down or use the store’s restrooms.

Starbucks’s change comes as the coffee chain has been uninviting to many coffee drinkers due to homeless people lingering in the cafe.

May 2018: “New Starbucks policy, no purchase needed to sit in cafes”

July 2022: “Starbucks to close 16 US stores because of crimes, rampant drug use”

Aug 2022: “‘Woke’ NYC Starbucks now a haven for junkies, drunks and homeless”
