MSNBC Bloodbath Deepens as Execs Fire Majority of Rachel Maddow’s Production Team

Rachel Maddow / MSNBC

The bloodbath over at MSNBC shows no sign of abating.

Rachel Maddow, the network’s highest-paid star, will lose the majority of her production team as part of the network’s broader restructuring efforts.

The news comes after executives abruptly cancelled fellow anchor Joy Reid’s show The ReidOut, causing anger and dismay among employees.

However, those being let go will be given the opportunity to apply for new roles within the company.

The Guardian reports:

MSNBC has told the majority of the employees who produce Rachel Maddow and Joy Reid’s prime-time evening news shows they are being let go as part of the network’s programming overhaul with the option to apply for new roles, according to two people directly familiar with the matter.

Maddow, the biggest star and highest-rated anchor at MSNBC, will get to keep her executive producer, Cory Gnazzo, and several other senior producers, the people said.

But the rest of Maddow’s team – along with producers who worked on the other cancelled shows, hosted by Katie Phang, Jonathan Capehart, Ayman Mohyeldin and José Díaz-Balart – have been given the option to claim severance or reapply for new roles at the network, the people said.

Maddow had already expressed her displeasure at the decision to fire Reid and launched a tirade against her bosses.

“In all of the jobs I have had in all of the years I have been alive there is no colleague for whom I have had more affection and more respect than Joy Reid,” Maddow said on Monday’s show.

“I love everything about her,” she continued. “I have so much more to learn from her I do not want to lose her as a colleague here at MSNBC, and personally, I think it is a bad mistake to let her walk out the door.”

”It is not my call, and I understand that, but that’s what I think.”

She also accused the network of racism for letting go of two other “non-white” hosts.

Alex Wagner, who is half Burmese, and lawyer Katie Phang, who is an Asian American, both lost their shows as part of the shakeup.

“At a network where we’ve got two—count ’em, two—non-white hosts in primetime, both of our non-white hosts in primetime are losing their shows, as is [Asian host] Katie Phang on the weekend,” Maddow said.

“And that feels worse than bad, no matter who replaces them,” she continued. “That feels indefensible, and I do not defend it.”
