Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Tuesday afternoon said a deal with Canada and Mexico will likely be announced on Wednesday.
Trump’s 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports went into effect at midnight.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded by imposing a 25% levy on billions of dollars of US imports and more tariffs will be imposed by the end of March.
During a press conference, Trudeau disrespected President Trump, called him by his first name, and said that imposing tariffs was a “dumb thing to do.”
“Now, it’s not in my habit to agree with the Wall Street Journal, but Donald, they point out that even though you’re a very smart guy, this is a very dumb thing to do,” Trudeau said.

Canadian Premiers also attacked President Trump in response to the tariffs.
Later Tuesday afternoon, Secretary Lutnick told Fox Business host Larry Kudlow that he had been on the phone all day with Canada and Mexico and that a deal was imminent.
“Both the Mexicans and the Canadians were on the phone with me all day today trying to show that they’ll do better, and the president is listening because, you know he’s very, very fair and very reasonable. So I think he’s gonna work something out with them. It’s not gonna be a pause. None of that pause stuff. But I think he’s gonna figure out, you do more, and I’ll meet you in the middle,” Lutnick said.
He added, “And we’ll probably be announcing that tomorrow.”
