DOGE Is Not Elected—Neither Are the IRS, DOJ, or FBI, Yet They Hold Authority

Senator Elizabeth Warren was asked what she’d like to say to Elon Musk and DOGE; her response, which is now going viral on Twitter, was, “Get the hell out of our government. Nobody elected you.”

However, this response is incredibly shortsighted and disingenuous. The overwhelming majority of government positions are not elected. In fact, only the President and Vice President are elected by the entire country. Senators and Representatives are elected by voters in their respective states and districts.

However, beyond these positions, no other officials in the federal government—including those in the IRS, DOJ, and FBI —are elected; they are appointed or hired.

Roughly 4 million federal government employees are not elected. There is no way Senator Elizabeth Warren doesn’t know that, making her position disingenuous. The millions of Democrats and liberals retweeting this and making similarly uninformed statements may genuinely be unaware. However, the congressional representatives pushing this narrative know it is false.

The same crowd is now shouting that Elon Musk “got ahold of classified documents” or “wants to get ahold of classified documents,” but this is nonsense. Musk already holds extremely high-level security clearances due to his work with NASA, SpaceX, and other defense-related projects. His companies have major government contracts with the Department of Defense (DoD), NASA, and the U.S. Space Force, all of which require access to classified information.

Some with a sophomoric understanding of security clearances argue that he only has “need-to-know” access, which is partially true, but there’s no evidence that he has accessed—or is even attempting to access—documents beyond his authorized clearance. His job requires access to a broad range of government data, and there’s no indication that he lacks the necessary clearance for it.

The claim that Musk shouldn’t be allowed to access sensitive data is pure political posturing rather than a genuine security concern. He already has the clearances, and there’s no concrete accusation that he’s accessing anything he shouldn’t.

The other baseless claim these people are making is that Elon Musk should be arrested, deported, or stripped of his citizenship, but this makes no sense for several reasons.

First, Musk is a naturalized U.S. citizen. Under U.S. law, citizenship cannot be revoked simply because someone is unpopular or controversial. The only way naturalized citizens can lose their citizenship is through fraud in the naturalization process or voluntarily renouncing it—neither of which applies to Musk.

Second, there is no legal basis for his arrest or deportation. Musk has not been charged with or convicted of any crime. Despite the noise, there is no evidence that he has mishandled classified documents or engaged in illegal activity. Even if someone doesn’t like his politics or business decisions, that’s not grounds for legal action.

Finally, these claims highlight the ignorance of those pushing them. They come from the same people who claim to be defenders of democracy and due process, yet they want to arrest and exile a private citizen simply because they don’t like him. It’s nothing more than hysterical political outrage with no legal or factual basis.

Another absurd claim from those attacking DOGE is that it’s “undemocratic” because the Department of Government Efficiency wasn’t created through an election. This argument is completely baseless because nearly every federal agency—from the IRS to the FBI—operates without direct electoral oversight. Government departments and agencies generally do not hold internal elections. The IRS doesn’t ask you to vote on whether or not they audit you.

The entire federal bureaucracy consists of unelected officials, yet these same critics have no issue with agencies that align with their political views. The reality is that their outrage isn’t about democracy—it’s about losing control over a system they’ve long used to their advantage.

So, if liberals and Democrats truly believe that only elected officials have authority, then they should try refusing to pay taxes or ignoring an FBI investigation and see how far that gets them.

If they think Musk should be deported, then why don’t they support President Trump deporting the millions of illegal aliens flooding the country?

And if they suddenly want government agencies to operate in a democratic fashion, where was that energy when unelected bureaucrats imposed draconian COVID restrictions without a vote—or when those same officials chose to stand down and let cities burn during the George Floyd riots?

The truth is, their outrage isn’t about democracy, security, or rule of law. It’s about losing control over a system they’ve manipulated for years.
