Michelle Obama is launching a new podcast with her brother, Craig Robinson.
The new venture, the “IMO” podcast, was launched by Higher Ground, the Obamas’ media company.
“My brother Craig and I launched the IMO podcast to create a space for people to come as they are, ask honest questions, give their opinions, and have thoughtful conversations about life,” Michelle Obama said.
The New York Times reviewed the first two episodes and said Michelle Obama discusses her brother’s divorce and her freedom after living in the White House for 8 years.
Michelle Obama also dishes on her reluctance to support Barack Obama during his run for the White House.
Excerpt from The New York Times:
The Times was provided with the first two episodes of “IMO,” which were both about an hour long. The hosts mainly offered advice based on their life experiences, and refrained from addressing current events or politics.
In the premiere, Mr. Robinson, the executive director of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, spoke of the contrast between the well-appointed rental where they were filming the episode and the small apartment in Chicago where they were raised and shared a bedroom. Their parents have both since passed away — their father, Fraser Robinson III, died in 1991, and their mother, Marian Robinson, who lived with the Obamas in the White House, died last May.
The siblings discussed trying times they endured, like Mr. Robinson’s divorce and Mrs. Obama’s initial reluctance to support her husband’s presidential run.
By the second episode, the show’s format becomes clearer. Mrs. Obama and Mr. Robinson are joined by a celebrity guest — the writer, actress and producer Issa Rae — who discusses a single topic, maintaining adult friendships, based on a listener’s question.
There were also lighter, more revelatory moments in both episodes. Mrs. Obama discloses that after years of Secret Service protection and restrictions, she has started driving again. She and her brother tease each other about the social differences between men and women.
Are the Obamas ‘soft launching’ a divorce?
Rumors the Obamas were headed for a divorce began in December after Michelle Obama skipped Jimmy Carter’s funeral and announced she wouldn’t be attending Trump’s inauguration.
It was also recently reported that Barack and Michelle Obama’s largest donors have dropped them amid rumors about their marriage.
The two have tried to shut down divorce rumors by posting love notes on social media, but most aren’t buying it since they haven’t been spotted together in public in months.
The Obamas posted a choreographed ‘Happy Valentine’s Day’ love message to each other last month.
Megyn Kelly and Daily Mail columnist Maureen Callahan discussed Barack Obama’s recent public outings without Michelle.
Barack Obama was recently seen at a Clippers game without Michelle. He was also spotted at dinner with his daughters, Malia and Sasha – again, without Michelle.
“I think they’re soft launching a divorce,” Maureen Callahan said.
