Rubio in Jeddah for peace talks with Ukraine.

Far away, under the exotic Arabian skies, a pivotal series of negotiations will take place tomorrow between the United States and Ukraine—talks that will establish whether the US will still be helping Kiev settle a war that it’s losing badly.

Saudi Arabia will host talks between the Donald J. Trump administration’s team and the members of the Kiev regime, in the Red Sea coastal town of Jeddah.

Besides addressing the winding down of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, it is expected also to mend strained US-Ukraine relations after Volodymyr Zelensky lit himself on fire in the Oval Office on February 28.

The US delegation is headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff completing the team.

Ukraine’s delegation is led by Andriy Yermak, the grey eminence who heads Zelensky’s presidential office.

It’s been widely reported that US officials would have stated that if the Ukrainian side does not show measurable progress in this round of talks, there may not be a way back for Kiev into a meaningful American alliance.

German Newspaper BILD has reported that the Trump administration intends to only restart the military aid to Ukraine after Zelensky is replaced and that they see him not as a partner for peace but as an obstacle.

Zelensky, never to stray away from the spotlight, is also in Saudi Arabia meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, but he is not expected to attend the talks directly.

The US is trying to measure Ukraine’s willingness to make concessions for peace, while Ukraine plans to propose an air and sea ceasefire to regain US support and demonstrate its commitment to peace.

The US-Ukraine critical minerals deal is also potentially on the table, a measure that Trump says is as compensation for past US military support.

Trump is optimistic, predicting ‘substantial progress’ and ‘pretty good results,’, and hinted that intelligence sharing could resume soon if the talks go well.
