The newly elected Canadian Prime Minister, the Liberal party banker Mark Carney, is reportedly about to dissolve the Parliament and call snap elections.
Carney wants to fully capitalize on the Liberal party surge in the polls, a political phenomenon fueled by hatred and Trump-Derangement-Syndrome that’s so pervasive in the US’ northern neighbors.
The Telegraph reported:
“Mr. Carney, who replaced Justin Trudeau as head of government this month, will announce the dissolution of the Canadian parliament on Sunday with voting to take place on April 28, an official familiar with the matter told AP.”
[…] Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative leader, has been hamstrung by his association with Donald Trump after the US president repeatedly suggested he could annex Canada as the ‘51st state’.”
Carney is the former governor of Britain and Canada’s central banks, and was sworn in as prime minister last Friday, after winning the contest to succeed Trudeau.
“The Liberals, who have had three terms in power under Mr. Trudeau, had long seemed destined for a crushing defeat at the hands of Mr. Poilievre’s Conservatives, which maintained a consistent 20-point lead in the polls. However, the political calculus has been upended since Mr. Trump entered office in January and declared a trade war on the US’ northern neighbor, imposing 25 per cent tariffs on imports and floating plans to annex Canada.”
Polling averages currently show the Liberals taking a small four-seat majority in the House of Commons.
“On Wednesday, Mr. Trump claimed that he did not care who won Canada’s election and hit out at Mr Poilievre, saying: ‘The Conservative that’s running is stupidly no friend of mine. I don’t know him, but he said negative things. So, when he says negative things, I couldn’t care less’.”
