The U.S. Treasury Department and the Hotel Washington were evacuated Thursday morning after a suspicious package was discovered just steps from the White House.

Authorities confirmed the incident occurred around 9:45 a.m. near the intersection of 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, an area that sits at the heart of the nation’s capital, according to DC News Now.

The Secret Service swiftly responded, backed by the Metropolitan Police Department’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team.

Though the bomb squad later deemed the area safe, the brief panic resulted in major road closures and a full evacuation of federal buildings.

Several streets remained closed Thursday afternoon, including 17th and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, from New York Avenue NW to E Street NW.

Next News Network reported:

“The police found a suspicious package right on the other side of the Eisenhower executive building. The bomb squad and police are clearing it now. There’s an incredible police presence from what I’ve heard.

I know that the White House has stopped all visitors. They shut down Pennsylvania Avenue in front of it. On grounds, we’re looking okay because we got that giant building shielding us from where it would be on the other side.

But I tell everybody, when you come out here, this is simultaneously the most dangerous place in the world and the safest place in the world.

I just want to say God bless and protect the people out there trying to work to clear this, and hopefully everybody’s safe out there. But yeah, it’s a real thing. It could happen any moment out here.”

All clear!
God bless the secret service!! Amazing work
