In the continuing feud between the Trump administration and the ANC government in South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa nominated a special envoy to negotiate with the USA who has called Donald Trump a “racist, homophobe, narcissistic right winger.”
President Cyril Ramaphosa nominated Former deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas on Monday as his special envoy “to repair fraught relations with the United States since the start of Trump’s presidency,” Eyewitness News reported.
Mcebisi Jonas’ past statements about Trump “could come back to bite him as he sets off on fixing strained relations between the two countries,” EWN wrote.
In November 2020, Jonas attacked Trump at the “11th Ahmed Kathrada lecture“:
“Right now, the US is undergoing a watershed moment, with Biden the certain winner in the presidential race against the racist, homophobe Donald Trump. How we got to a situation where a narcissistic right-winger took charge of the world’s greatest economic and military powerhouse, is something that we need to ponder over.”
“Hopefully the defeat of Trump will deal a blow to the de-globalization lobby,” Jonas went on to say.
Former Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool was expelled from the US by Secretary of State Marco Rubio in March for calling President Trump a White Supremacist.
On April 12, Trump threatened to boycott the November G20 Summit in South Africa.
“How could we be expected to go to South Africa for the very important G20 Meeting when Land Confiscation and Genocide is the primary topic of conversation? They are taking the land of white Farmers, and then killing them and their families,” Trump asked. “The Media refuses to report on this. The United States has held back all contributions to South Africa. Is this where we want to be for the G20? I don’t think so!”
The Trump administration announced it was suspending US aid to South Africa on February 8 over the race-based expropriation law and persecution of ethnic minorities, and offered asylum to persecuted minorities in South Africa.
