Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis May Remove Orlando’s Democratic Mayor If He Upholds Sanctuary City Policies

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier is warning Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer that he may face removal from office if he implements a policy of protecting illegal immigrants.

The threat comes after Dyer said during a meeting with the Orlando Police Department that law enforcement should resist immigration enforcement and should adhere to the Trust Act.

The act, passed in 2018 by city authorities, prohibits city employees and law enforcement from inquiring about an individual’s immigration status.

In a letter to Dyer posted on the X platform, Uthmeier said that Governor Ron DeSantis would reserve the right to remove Dyer from office if he followed down this path.

The letter states:

By prohibiting law enforcement officers from inquiring about a person’s immigration status, the City of Orlando is unlawfully implementing a sanctuary policy and blatantly violating the law.

Law enforcement must be able to attain information regarding an individual’s legal status in order to comply with state and federal immigration laws and assist in federal immigration operations.

They are authorized to collect this information without hindrance under Florida law. As the mayor of the City of Orlando and as an official responsible for directing OPD, you must use best efforts to support the enforcement of federal immigration crimes as required by Florida law.

Sanctuary policies are not tolerated or lawful in Florida. Failure to abide by state law may result in the enforcement of applicable penalties, including but not limited to being held in contempt, declaratory or injunctive relief, and removal from office by the Governor pursuant to section 908.107, Florida Statutes and the Florida Constitution.

Today, I sent a letter to @orlandomayor reminding him that the sanctuary policy adopted by the city in 2018, the ‘Trust Act,’ is void under a 2019 law signed by @GovRonDeSantis.

Dyer responded to Uthmeir with a letter claiming that he takes immigration law “very seriously” and that he and the Orlando Police Department do not “have any intention of violating federal or state law.”

He added that city authorities are gearing up to “continue to use our best efforts to support the enforcement of federal immigration law, as well as state law.”

While Florida has become a massive Republican stronghold, Orlando remains one of the few areas of liberal resistance.

Dyer has served as the city’s mayor for over two decades. His most recent re-election was in November 2023, when he declared that would be his final term in office.
