A Virginia homeowner is potentially facing the rest of his life behind bars after gunning down a high school student last Saturday in Spotsylvania County, allegedly following a stupid TikTok prank.

The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office revealed that 27-year-old Tyler James Butler was charged Tuesday with killing 18-year-old high school senior Michael Bosworth Jr. and injuring one of his friends. The other teen in the group was unharmed.

Bosworth was taken to a hospital following the shooting, where he passed away.

To make things even more tragic, Bosworth was killed on the same day as his high school prom.

The New York Post reported that the police initially believed the three teens were attempting to burglarize a residential block in Fredericksburg around 3 a.m. on Saturday, but now do not believe this to be the case.

Butler claimed to police that the kids were trying to break into his house on McKenzie Lane, but the uninjured teen said this was part of a prank called “ding dong ditch” that was supposed to be shared on TikTok later. This prank involves ringing doorbells and running away.

The teen also reportedly offered cops his phone to show a similar video shot earlier that evening.

The injured kid told police the same story as his friend.

The Fredericksburg Free Lance Star reported that the kid wounded in the incident said the group was looking to hide when gunshots went off.

Bosworth’s father revealed to NBC 4 Washington that his son was a Massaponax High School senior who played lacrosse and football. Bosworth was also on the wrestling team.

The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office said Butler is facing the following charges: second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

According to NBC 4 Washington, Butler is currently being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on no bond.

People with information regarding the incident are being urged to contact the sheriff’s office.
