President Trump unloaded on ABC’s Martha Raddatz Sunday after the longtime network anchor took a bizarre detour during her interview with Cardinal Blase Cupich, insisting that the recent historic election of Pope Leo XIV had “nothing to do with Donald Trump.”
ABC’s Sunday morning show, often hosted by George Stephanopoulos, was immediately dubbed “The Slopadopolus Show” by Trump in his post, a play on its reputation for biased, sycophantic coverage of Democrats and manufactured outrage over anything Trump says or does.
Trump took to Truth Social and torched Raddatz in signature fashion, calling her a Trump-deranged “old timer” during what was supposed to be a reverent post-conclave discussion.
Trump wrote:
“So funny to watch old timer Martha Raditz on ABC Fake News (the Slopadopolus show!) this morning, blurt out that, effectively, Pope Leo’s selection had nothing to do with Donald Trump. It came out of nowhere, but it was on her Trump Deranged Mind.
Remember, I did WIN the Catholic Vote, by a lot! Bob Iger should do something about the losers and haters he’s got on his low rated shows. It’s time for change. MAGA!!!”
The moment came during an interview on ABC’s This Week, where Raddatz welcomed Chicago’s ultra-liberal Cardinal Blase Cupich to reflect on the elevation of America’s first pope. But rather than focus on the religious and global significance of the moment, Raddatz couldn’t help but inject politics — specifically Trump — into the conversation.
With a sudden pivot that even Cupich seemed unsure how to navigate, Raddatz threw in a loaded remark suggesting the Pope’s selection was totally unrelated to Trump — a statement that, oddly, no one had even claimed in the first place.
RADDATZ: And, of course, Pope Francis cared so much about the poor and migrants. Pope Leo does as well. In some ways, will he be a counterbalance for what’s happening in American politics right now and President Trump?
CUPICH: I think he’s going to help complete and complement our political agenda. He’ll talk a lot about the immigrants as well because he knows about the sufferings of people and the real needs that they have for a better life.
And he knows too that people in Oceania, for instance, where the — the rising sea levels are just — getting — overwhelming those islands, where people are trying to escape, he sees the drug trade that’s happening in Central and South America where there are weapons form the United States going there. He knows that those people need an option.
And he’ll call for, I think, as the bishops have in the United States, fixing this broken immigration system.
