On May 20, 2025, 8-year-old Juliette Leong testified before the Nevada Assembly Committee on Ways and Means in support of AB 584, a bill promoting school choice. The bill is designed to enhance school choice, accountability, and funding for high-performing educators while giving families wider access to alternative educational settings, including charter and private schools and homeschooling.
Even at such a young age, Juliette has already become a philanthropist, a TEDx speaker, and a painter. In her bold and captivating testimpny, she shared how her family’s decision to homeschool her has helped her embrace her potential.
Juliette’s testimony, however, primarily focused on other students, like her, who have immense potential but do not have the means to choose the path her family did.
Juliette gave a powerful argument on why School Choice is an essential option for students.
She told the Committee, “My name is Juliet Leung….and I’m here today to express my strong support for Bill A. B. 584 to expand school choice. Thanks to Governor Lombardo, Nevada is on its way to becoming a true school choice state, giving the children the tools to thrive.”
Our school system is too large and too slow to keep up with the world shaped by rapidly changing job markets. That’s why families need options like smaller private schools, charter schools, and homeschooling.”
“I spell at a third-grade level and do high school-level math, and no school could accommodate my needs, so I’m homeschooled.”
“Because of that, I’ve performed at Carnegie Hall, won six national math competitions, and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to nonprofit organizations through the sales of my paintings.”
“But what about the child with the same potential, except whose family can’t afford to homeschool? It’s not just about academics. It’s about unlocking talents, building confidence, and creating opportunities.”
“It’s about teaching kids to solve problems and make a difference. Since every kid is different and every family has different circumstances, School Choice is how we prepare Nevada students for real-world success and that everyone who wants a job gets a world is moving forward, and Nevada needs to move forward with the world.”
“Thank you, Governor Lombardo, for fighting for School Choice.”
