Geert Wilders Leaves Coalition Over Differences On Asylum and Migration, and Dutch Government Collapses – PM Dick Schoof to Hand in His Resignation to the King

Ducth Prime Minister’s Dick Schoof’s government collapses as Geert Wilders and his most voted PVV leave the coalition.

Back in November 2023, the rightwing PVV party led by firebrand conservative leader Geert Wilders came out as the most voted, but the mainstream parties (even the right-wing mainstream ones) ‘firewalled’ Wilders, insisting that they’d only join a coalition if Wilders was NOT the Prime Minister.

No less than 299 days later, a coalition government was formed, with former Intel chief Dick Schoof as the premier – and it was not what the citizens of the Netherlands had voted for.

PM Schoof didn’t fulfill the electoral mandate to change immigration policies.

About a week ago, Wilders came out with a new immigration plan to really tackle the causes and catastrophic effects of unchecked mass migration.

Since he found no support in his own supposedly right-wing coalition, Wilders said today that the PVV party will leave the governing coalition, which effectively topples the Schoof government.

Reuters reported:

“Wilders said his coalition partners were not willing to embrace his ideas of halting asylum migration, for which he had demanded immediate support last week.

‘No signature under our asylum plans. The PVV leaves the coalition’, Wilders said in a post on X.”

Dutch News reported:

“At a press conference last week, Wilders presented a 10-point plan to cut migration by enlisting the army to secure and patrol the borders, close refugee accommodation facilities and send home all Syrian refugees on the grounds that the country is no longer high-risk.”

Yesterday, the PVV leader gave the three other coalition party leaders an ultimatum: ‘add their signatures’ to the plans and quickly implement some of the measures, or he would quit.

The BBB party called his actions “irresponsible”, and the NSC deemed it ‘incomprehensible’.

The second biggest coalition party, the VVD, said ‘there was no difference of opinion between the parties’.

Schoof expected to hand his resignation to the King later today.

“The PVV leader also called for EU quotas on asylum to be suspended temporarily and a total ban on children and other family members joining refugees who are already in the Netherlands.

[…] Prime minister Dick Schoof is expected to hand in his resignation to the king later in the day.”
