Highly unpopular French President Emmanuel Macron is constantly chasing foreign-policy opportunities to grandstand as the consequential world leader that he is not.

Today, Macron managed to land another spot in the headlines as he shares a ‘substantial’ phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the Ukraine and the Middle East crisis.

This is their first call since September 2022, which is unsurprising, given that France is one of Kiev’s key backers having reportedly spent over $4 billion in military assistance to Ukraine – not to mention the fact that Macron kept floating the idea of deploying French soldiers to Ukraine.

Reuters reported:

“In Paris, Macron’s office said the call lasted two hours and that the French leader had called for a ceasefire in Ukraine and the start of negotiations on ending the conflict.

According to the Kremlin press service, Putin said it was necessary to respect Iran’s right to the peaceful development of nuclear energy as well as its continued compliance with its obligations under the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.”

Macron became on of Kiev regime’s biggest backers.

“Any possible peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine should have a ‘comprehensive and long-term character’ and be based on ‘new territorial realities’, the Kremlin quoted Putin as saying.”

The French Elysée palace said Macron has also stressed the need for Iran to comply with its obligations under the ‘Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons’, as well as to cooperate fully with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

RT reported:

“During the call, Putin told Macron that the Ukraine conflict was ‘a direct consequence of the policies pursued by Western states, which for many years ignored Russia’s security interests’, and had established an ‘anti-Russian bridgehead’ in the country, the [Russian] press service stated.”

Russia and France, as nuclear powers, have to act to preserve the ‘non-proliferation regime’, the two leaders agreed.

“’In this regard, the importance of respecting Tehran’s legitimate right to develop peaceful nuclear energy and continuing to fulfill its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, including cooperation with the IAEA, was emphasized’, the Kremlin press service said.”
