Vance Luther Boelter, the man accused of the targeted assassination of Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, has claimed that his motive “didn’t involve Trump stuff or pro-life.”
The brazen attack, which also left State Senator John Hoffman and his wife injured in a separate shooting in Champlin, has sent shockwaves through the state and nation, with authorities labeling it a “politically motivated” act of terror.
Speaking to the New York Post from Sherburne County Jail, Boelter said that his motive was not what people have speculated.
“You are fishing and I can’t talk about my case…I’ll say it didn’t involve either the Trump stuff or pro-life,” Vance Boelter wrote to The Post.
“I am pro-life personaly [sic] but it wasn’t those,” he said. “I will just say there is a lot of information that will come out in future that people will look at and judge for themselves that goes back 24 months before the 14th. If the gov ever let’s [sic] it get out.”
Boelter was appointed by Walz in 2019 to serve on the Governor’s Workforce Development Board and lead an international security firm.

Boelter harped on a handwritten, one-and-a-half page letter left in an abandoned SUV at the crime scene that was addressed to FBI Director Kash Patel, saying critical elements were kept from the public.
“Can I ask what you heard as an outside person about the note that the alleged person — I’ll say alleged person — left in that car, did you hear anything about that?” demanded Boelter, wearing a yellow, jail-issued jumpsuit, in a thick Minnesotan accent.
In the letter, which has not been released publicly, Boelter reportedly claimed he had been secretly trained by the US Military and was asked by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to perform the killings, so that the 2024 Democratic vice presidential candidate could run for Minnesota Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s seat.
“Certain details of that letter were leaked out that probably painted one kind of a picture, but a lot more important details that were in that letter were not leaked out,” Boelter said during the second televisit Friday, refusing to elaborate on the alleged details, besides to say they pertained to “things that were going on in Minnesota.”
“I also made sure when I was arrested that they secured that letter — I made the request that they secure that letter before it gets destroyed — because I was concerned somebody would destroy it,” said Boelter, now sporting a salt and pepper goatee.
According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), last month, Boelter, allegedly impersonating a police officer and equipped with an armored vest and Taser, struck the Hoffman residence in Champlin late in the night on June 14. Just over an hour later, he targeted the Hortman home in nearby Brooklyn Park, where a vehicle resembling a police squad car with flashing lights was spotted in the driveway.
Brooklyn Park police, proactively checking on Hortman due to her proximity to Hoffman, encountered the suspect, who opened fire before fleeing on foot. Officers returned fire, but Boelter escaped, leaving behind a manifesto and a list of other legislators and officials, according to law enforcement sources.
“No Kings” flyers were also found inside his vehicle before he was apprehended.
