Minnesota Democratic Senator Tina Smith has been admitted to a hospital after falling ill today and will not be able to help Democrats try to block tonight’s recession package vote.

As Politico reported , Smith’s office released a statement saying the senator is expected to stay overnight for observation, assuming it does not take a turn for the worse.

She also hopes to be back in the near future.

No details were given regarding Smith’s illness.

Here is the statement:

“While at work at the Capitol today, Sen. Smith started to not feel well. She went to the Capitol physician who recommended she undergo more thorough examination at GW hospital,” the statement read.

“Out of an abundance of caution, they are keeping her overnight for observation.”

“She expects to be back at work very soon.”

A Note from Senator Smith’s Staff:

Smith being out of work means Republicans will have a bit more margin of error and will not have to rely on Vice-Presiden JD Vance to break a tie vote like he did last night.

Politico notes that the Vance was in Pennsylvania earlier today and is supposed to return to DC this evening.

Smith is retiring after her term ends next year.
