China has officially banned the UK-based platform OnlyFans as of July 2025.
The ban targets the site’s subscription-based model, which primarily features adult content. Authorities have blocked all access, including previous workarounds.
OnlyFans, founded in 2016 and headquartered in London, allows creators to charge subscribers for exclusive material. The platform hosts sexually explicit content alongside non-adult offerings like fitness and cooking videos. It attracts over 300 million monthly visits globally.
Beijing’s action aligns with efforts to regulate the digital space and eliminate “immoral” influences.
Officials described OnlyFans as representing “Western moral decay” and a threat to traditional values. This reflects China’s zero-tolerance policy toward pornography.
OnlyFans was never formally available in mainland China due to the Great Firewall. Users previously accessed it via VPNs and third-party payment systems. A brief period of direct access occurred in late 2024.
The 2025 ban enhances measures to detect and block VPNs targeting the site. It restricts both creators and subscribers in China. This eliminates remaining loopholes for engagement.
Pornography production and consumption are illegal in China, with penalties including fines and short jail terms. Violators face up to CNY 15,000 in fines. The Onlyfans ban enforces these long-standing laws.
China’s Great Firewall blocks thousands of foreign websites, including Facebook, X, and Google. YouTube, Instagram, and Reddit are also inaccessible without circumvention tools.
The Cyberspace Administration of China oversees all internet censorship. Platforms must self-censor using AI and human teams. Domestic apps like WeChat are monitored for inappropriate content.
Video games face strict regulations, with limits on minors’ playtime to three hours. Foreign titles require content approval and are often delayed. Themes conflicting with official narratives are censored.
Imported films undergo heavy editing to remove political or social references. Hollywood movies frequently have scenes cut for compliance. This ensures alignment with China’s policy of “positive energy” content that fosters optimism, patriotism, and socialist values.
Crackdowns extend to portrayals of “sissy men” in media, banned since 2021. Discussions on feminism and LGBTQ+ topics are restricted.
The 2025 enforcement follows 2023-2024 campaigns to “clean up” the internet. Thirteen major platforms were investigated for hosting explicit material with intensified scrutiny on foreign influences.
China’s policies seek to preserve social harmony and cultural cohesion, with the OnlyFans ban being one component of its broader digital control measures.
