Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has lashed out at speculation that the Trump administration may soon be willing to launch military action against the country’s drug cartels.
Speaking at a daily press conference on Friday, Sheinbaum was asked about reports of a secret presidential order that would allow direct military operations against Mexico’s leading cartels.
“We cooperate, collaborate, but there will be no invasion,” she said.
“That is off the table, absolutely off the table.”
Sheinbaum added that she had previously warned the Trump administration against any plans for military action on foreign soil.
“We had been told that this order was coming, and it was expressed to us that there was going to be no participation of any military or institution in our territory,” she continued.
”The U.S. agencies that have a presence in this country are very strictly regulated.”
“We are the country that has more regulations on foreign agencies.”

Her comments came after The New York Times reported on how the White House is planning to move decisively against the cartels.
Their report stated:
President Trump has secretly signed a directive to the Pentagon to begin using military force against certain Latin American drug cartels that his administration has deemed terrorist organizations, according to people familiar with the matter.
The decision to bring the American military into the fight is the most aggressive step so far in the administration’s escalating campaign against the cartels. It signals Mr. Trump’s continued willingness to use military forces to carry out what has primarily been considered a law enforcement responsibility to curb the flow of fentanyl and other illegal drugs.
The order provides an official basis for the possibility of direct military operations at sea and on foreign soil against cartels.
U.S. military officials have started drawing up options for how the military could go after the groups, the people familiar with the conversations said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive internal deliberations.
Sheinbaum has never made any secret of her desire to protect her country’s leading criminal organizations.
Back in February, she filed a constitutional amendment designed to block any investigation or military action by foreign entities without permission from her government.
“What we want to make clear in the face of this designation is that we do not negotiate sovereignty,” Sheinbaum said at the time.
“This cannot be an opportunity on the part of the United States to invade our sovereignty.”
”So, they can name it whatever they want, but with Mexico, it is collaboration and coordination, never subordination, not interference, and much less invasion.”
