On Thursday, Michael H. Schill, President of Northwestern University, resigned following repeated clashes with President Trump’s agenda.
In July, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that Schill announced university plans to cut 425 positions following the Trump administration’s announcement that it was freezing $790 million earmarked for the school.
The school, located in the liberal suburban Chicago enclave of Evanston, Illinois, has also come under fire for its concessions to radical Hamas supporters and for anti-semitic activity on its campus.
Last year, Mr. Schill testified before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, where his handling of antisemitism during campus protests over the war in Gaza was questioned.
The president of Northwestern University, Michael H. Schill, announced Thursday that he would resign, after a difficult tenure that included attacks from Republicans in Congress and cuts by the Trump administration that forced the university to lay off hundreds.
Northwestern became a target this year of Trump officials, who cut nearly $800 million of the university’s federal research funds, after months of intense scrutiny from Republicans.
Mr. Schill had faced withering questions during a Congressional hearing last year, as Republicans accused the university of not doing enough to address antisemitism during campus protests over the war in Gaza. They have argued that the school is still not aggressive enough in protecting Jewish students from harassment. And Jewish groups including the Anti-Defamation League and the Brandeis Center have called for Mr. Schill to resign, faulting him for negotiating with the protesters.
In a statement, Schill shared, “Over the past three years, it has been my profound honor to serve as president of Northwestern University. In that time, our community has made significant progress while simultaneously facing extraordinary challenges. Together, we have made decisions that strengthened the institution and helped safeguard its future.”

Last month, writer, researcher, and filmmaker Christopher Rufo exposed Schill’s DEI regime and possible violation of federal civil rights law.

Clashes with the Trump administration and blowback for failing to address anti-semitism on campuses have cost several university leaders their jobs.
In December of 2023, UPenn’s Liz Magill resigned from her position.
In January, Claudine Gay resigned as President of Harvard following her disturbing comments regarding the war in Gaza and nearly 50 allegations of plagiarism.
In March, Columbia University’s interim president Katrina Armstrong, also under fire for her handling of campus protests, resigned.
