Britain’s deputy prime minister, Angela Rayner, has resigned after underpaying property tax by around £40,000.
Rayner, who was paraded by the U.K. Labour Party as their left-wing working-class hero, announced her resignation on Friday after days of pressure on her position.
In her resignation letter, Rayner admitted she “deeply regrets” not seeking “additional specialist tax advice” when buying the Hove property.
The letter read:
I deeply regret my decision to not seek additional specialist tax advice given both my position asHousing Secretary and my complex family arrangements.
I take full responsibility for this error. I would like to take this opportunity to repeat that it was never my intention to do anything other thanpay the right amount.
I must also consider the significant toll that the ongoing pressure of the media is taking on my family.While I rightly expect proper scrutiny on me and my life, my family did not choose to have theirprivate lives interrogated and exposed so publicly.
I have been clear throughout this process that my priority has, and always will be, protecting my children and the strain I am putting them under through staying in post has become unbearable.
Rayner will be replaced in her role as deputy prime minister by outgoing Foreign Secretary David Lammy.

Her resignation comes as a significant blow to the authority of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whose government appears to be in a perilous position despite their massive majority.
Just this week, Reform Party leader Nigel Farage testified before Congress about the growing free speech crisis in Britain, where political dissidents are regularly being arrested for so-called hateful speech online.
Meanwhile, the government is also under increasing pressure to shut its borders to immigration entirely as thousands of illegal aliens continue to arrive on the country’s southern shore.
After claiming so-called asylum in Britain, migrants typically have their entire lives funded by the British taxpayer, despite widespread opposition to this polcy.
