The Associated Press has confirmed that Charlie Kirk is alive, but in critical condition, after being shot at a Turning Point USA event in Utah on Wednesday.
Kirk was shot at an event at Utah Valley University in Orem while speaking before a large crowd.
The AP reported just before 4 p.m.:
Charlie Kirk, the CEO and co-founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was in critical condition at a Utah hospital Wednesday after being shot at a college event, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. A suspect was in custody, the college said.
Graphic video footage circulating online captures the terrifying moment: Kirk is mid-response to a student’s question about mass shootings when the shot is fired. He recoils violently, slumping in his chair as blood gushes from the left side of his neck. “Oh my God! Run, run!” screams are heard as attendees flee the quad.
Video of a suspect being taken into custody was posted across social media shortly after the incident.
Authorities have confirmed the Charlie Kirk shooter as Michael Mallinson, a registered Democrat in Utah.

However, UVU spokesperson Scott Trotter released a statement saying the suspect is not yet in custody, despite previous reports and footage.
“On September 10, 2025, at 12:20 a single shot rang out in the quad near the food court on the Utah Valley University Orem Campus as Mr. Charlie Kirk began speaking at his planned rally. We can confirm that Mr. Kirk was shot, but we don’t know his condition. The suspect is not in custody. Police are still investigating Campus is closed for the rest of the day.”
The situation is currently unfolding, and TGP will be providing updates as more information becomes available.
