The United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, was placed on lockdown Thursday evening following reports of an active threat on campus.
According to multiple sources, a former midshipman who had been dismissed from the academy returned armed and disguised as a police officer, knocking on doors.

The incident began around 5:30 p.m. local time on Thursday, when alerts were issued to students and staff to shelter in place immediately.
An email from the academy warned of a lockdown, instructing individuals to lock and barricade doors, stay away from windows, and remain in place until an all-clear was given. This was not a drill, the message emphasized.
An unnamed official on campus told the network, “The shooter is knocking on doors pretending to be a military policeman.”
“Naval Support Activity Annapolis, in coordination with local law enforcement, is currently responding to reports of threats made to the Naval Academy,” NSAA PAO, LT Naweed Lemar, added.
Lemar continued, “The base is on lockdown out of an abundance of caution. This is a developing situation and we will provide updates as they become available.”

Aerial footage showed police officers equipped with long guns and body armor outside campus buildings, and an armored vehicle was spotted heading to the scene.
