When Democrats tell you who they really are, believe them.
Former Transportation Secretary and 2028 presidential contender Pete Buttigieg has expressed excitement about the campaign of New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.
Buttigieg said that Mamdani, a self-professed communist with strong links to Islamism, has the “capacity to be a great mayor.”
“I don’t live in New York, but I think he has the capacity to be a great mayor,” Buttigieg said in an interview with CNN.
“He, I think, right now, has been taking a lot of steps that are not just about winning, but about trying to bring people together, which is something that people didn’t see in him or expect from him earlier on in the campaign,” he continued.
“I don’t think he needs me in order to win, but I think it’s a really important and exciting race to watch.”

While Buttigieg stopped short of formally endorsing Mamdani, he said that his main opponent, Andrew Cuomo, had disqualified himself from public office.
“I mean, Andrew Cuomo has disqualified himself in so many ways, including morally, and that’s just one of many reasons why I think so many New Yorkers are going to vote for Mamdani,” he argued.
Buttigieg’s comments come after several establishment Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and New York Governor Kathy Hochul, publicly endorsed Mamdani’s campaign.
“Zohran Mamdani has relentlessly focused on addressing the affordability crisis and explicitly committed to being a mayor for all New Yorkers, including those who do not support his candidacy,” Jeffries announced last week.
“In that spirit, I support him and the entire citywide Democratic ticket in the general election,” he continued.
Hochul, meanwhile, argued that Mamdani was “focused on making New York City affordable, a goal I enthusiastically support.”
“In the past few months, I’ve had frank conversations with him,” she said at the time. “We’ve had our disagreements.”
“But in our conversations, I heard a leader who shares my commitment to a New York where children can grow up safe in their neighborhoods and where opportunity is within reach for every family.”

Such endorsements will likely be meaningless to the outcome.
According to the latest polling data from RealClearPolitics, Mamdani holds a commanding 17.2 percent lead over Cuomo, who is running as an independent after losing out on the Democratic nomination.
