Two Dozen ‘Unprepared’ Hikers Rescued From Winter-Like Conditions on Mount Washington, New England’s Highest Peak

The cog railway at Mount Washington – Screencap of YouTube video.

Two dozen hikers had to be rescued from Mount Washington this week, as they were ‘unprepared’ for the winter-like conditions on New England’s highest peak.

For people who are unfamiliar with the region, Mount Washington in New Hampshire is unlike other mountains in the area because even if the weather is warm at the base, once you start getting near the top it is cold, even in summer months. At this time of year, it can seem like winter near the top with snow and freezing winds.

These hikers got lucky because they were noticed by the man who operates the cog railway that runs up and down the mountain. He rescued them.

FOX News reports:

More than 20 ‘ill-prepared’ hypothermic hikers rescued from snowy conditions on New England’s highest peak

More than 20 “ill-prepared” hikers were rescued from the summit of Mount Washington in New Hampshire over the weekend after they got stuck in whiteout conditions, officials said.

The hikers had reached the mountain’s 6,288-foot summit, but “most had no idea that summit services would be unavailable and that the state park was closed for the season,” Andy Vilaine, the assistant general manager for the Mount Washington Cog Railway, said in a statement.

“The summit is halfway,” Vilaine said.

Vilaine said that many were hypothermic and without gear “even near suitable for the conditions.”

Some of the hikers even admitted it was “their first hike ever,” Vilaine said.

“Please don’t become a statistic and do your research before venturing out,” he said.

Mount Washington, New England’s highest peak, is known for its extreme and severe weather, earning it the nickname “Home of the World’s Worst Weather.”

Here’s a video report:

The summit finally cleared from the fog this morning, unveiling a wintry summit and higher terrain under mostly clear skies with an undercast layer moving in from the north. After the snow of the past few days, we are now sitting at a monthly total of 11.2”. (1/x) pic.twitter.com/VoQ3Qu6shM

The first measurable snowfall of the season took place early this morning (October 16th). While accumulations were very light, rime ice produced from freezing fog is adding to the appearance of a snow-dusted Mount Washington. pic.twitter.com/PHDjCrbool

Always be well prepared if you’re going to take on a mountain with a hike! Especially a big one like this.
