Senator Richard Blumenthal is very upset about the Trump administration’s strikes against Latin American drug cartels.
During an appearance on MSNBC on Friday, Blumenthal complained there was insufficient evidence to suggest that the vessels targeted by the Pentagon were involved in narcotics trafficking.
“What briefings have you received on the success of striking drug traffickers?” asked host Nicolle Wallace.
”Have you seen evidence or images of drugs being found on the boats that have been struck?”
Blumenthal responded:
What briefings? Zero. And as you may know, I think it’s public by now, there was a briefing for Republican senators only, which is unprecedented. So we’ve seen no evidence, none whatsoever, as to who is in these boats, more than ten of them that have been struck already, who are manning or operating them, what they’re carrying and where they’re headed.”
Nor have we received any briefing as to what their strategy is in amassing one seventh of our Navy, literally one seventh of all our naval power in the vicinity of Venezuela, whether it is to strike those military installations, as the Herald and the Wall Street Journal have reported they consider doing. And what the end game is.
There was a briefing yesterday in the House for Democratic, as well as Republican members of Congress. And my discussions with those members of Congress indicates that it was completely unconvincing and virtually uninformative. So this administration is concealing facts. If it has facts that would justify such strikes.
Many Democrats and left-wing political activists are unhappy about the strikes, claiming they are a violation of their precious international law.
Volker Türk, a lawyer and career bureaucrat who has served as High Commissioner for Human Rights since 2022, has demanded an investigation into the “unacceptable strikes.”
“These attacks and their mounting human cost are unacceptable,” said his spokeswoman, Ravina Shamdasani, at a briefing on Friday.
“The U.S. must halt such attacks and take all measures necessary to prevent the extrajudicial killing of people aboard these boats.”<
She added that “airstrikes by the United States of America on boats in the Caribbean and in the Pacific violate international human rights law.”

Meanwhile, there are growing reports that the White House is planning to authorize strikes inside Venezuela with a view to removing Nicolas Maduro’s socialist regime from power.
