The Senate is expected to vote this evening on the passage of a government funding bill that will reopen the government amid the longest shutdown in US history.

According to Politico, the vote is expected at 5 pm ET, then Senators will leave town.

Watch live below:

The vote is expected to include an amendment on provisions for the hemp industry from Senator Rand Paul (R-KY). Earlier it was reported that Paul delayed a vote on the final package to reopen the government.

Per the Hill:

Senate Republican and Democratic leaders say they need to resolve an objection from Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) about a provision in the government funding deal before they can accelerate consideration of the bill to end the 41-day shutdown.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) told reporters Monday morning there is only one “objector” to speeding up Senate consideration of the government funding package, referring to Paul, who wants to strip a provision from the package that would prevent the unregulated sale of intoxicating hemp-based products.

Paul wants to strip out language from the bill funding the Department of Agriculture that would ban the unregulated sale of intoxicating hemp-based or hemp-derived products, such as Delta-8, from being sold online or at gas stations and corner stores. The deal the Senate advanced Sunday includes full-year funding bills for military construction, veterans’ affairs, the Department of Agriculture and the legislative branch.

A spokesperson for Paul said the Kentucky senator wants to reopen the government right away, but he has a major problem with provisions in the bill that “unfairly target Kentucky’s hemp industry.”

Rand Paul responded this afternoon, denying that he is responsible for the delay, pointing to the fixed timing under Senate rules.

“But there is extraneous language in this package that has nothing to do with reopening the government and would harm Kentucky’s hemp farmers and small businesses,” he said.

Just to be clear: I am not delaying this bill. The timing is already fixed under Senate procedure. But there is extraneous language in this package that has nothing to do with reopening the government and would harm Kentucky’s hemp farmers and small businesses.

As The Gateway Pundit reported, during a rare weekend session on Sunday, 40 days into the shutdown, eight Senate Democrats crossed the aisle to invoke cloture on the continuing resolution to fund the government through January 30, 2026.

However, the package included concessions from Republicans, including undoing federal layoffs with backpay for federal employees who were fired during the shutdown and extending Affordable Care Act tax credits.

Still, this ignited a civil war within the Democratic Party with some Democrats turning their frustration toward Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Per Fox:

The package advanced by the Senate on Sunday looks to reopen the government through Jan. 30, 2026, and also includes a bundle of three yearlong spending bills to fund Veterans Affairs, the country’s agriculture expenses and the legislative branch.

In return, Democrats who voted for the package secured the inclusion of language that prevents the Trump administration from conducting mass layoffs of federal workers through Jan. 30 and guarantees back pay for federal employees fired since the beginning of the shutdown. Additionally, they secured a stand-alone vote on the tax credit subsidies to be considered later this year, although that vote remains likely to fail without the needed Republican support.

To some Democrats, a failure to secure an extension — or even a partial extension — of the Obamacare subsidies was unacceptable.

The bill now moves to a final vote, which only requires a simple majority.

The Senate convened at 11 am to resume consideration of the bill.

The Senate will convene today at 11:00am. Following Leader remarks, the Senate will resume consideration of H.R.5371, {Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2026}, upon reconsideration, post-cloture.

Roll call votes are expected during Monday’s session.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said on the Senate Floor this morning that he hopes for the vote to be held within “hours” and called on his colleagues not to “pointlessly drag this bill out,” according to CNN.

“We will be voting on the final package in the very near future, and I’m hoping that will be hours and not days,” he said during this morning’s session.

“I don’t think it’s in anybody’s best interest to drag this out. So hopefully we’ll be — that would be the best outcome, I think, to get it done,” Thune said.

After the bill passes the Senate, it will be transmitted to the House for a final vote before the government can reopen.
