Pennsylvania State Police are scrambling to crack the case of an unprecedented egg heist.
Over the weekend, approximately 100,000 organic eggs, valued at a staggering $40,000, were stolen from the back of a distribution trailer owned by Pete & Gerry’s Organics in Greencastle, Pennsylvania.
The Pennsylvania State Police reported that the theft occurred around 8:40 p.m., with the eggs being taken from the rear of the trailer, according to WHP-TV.
“Pete & Gerry’s is aware of a recent incident in Franklin County, Pennsylvania and we are actively working with local law enforcement to investigate,” the company said in a statement.
“We take this matter seriously and are committed to resolving it as quickly as possible. Due to the ongoing investigation we cannot comment any further on this matter.”
Trooper First Class Megan Frazer, a spokesperson for the Pennsylvania State Police, expressed the uniqueness of the case, stating, “In my career, I’ve never heard of a hundred thousand eggs being stolen. This is definitely unique.”
“We’re relying on leads from people from the community. So we’re hoping that somebody knows something, and they’ll call us and give us some tips,” she said.
Pete & Gerry’s Organics is a family-owned company specializing in the production of organic, free-range eggs sourced from small family farms across the United States.
“Setting a higher standard for farming practices and animal care across an entire industry doesn’t happen without ruffling a few feathers — we squawk the squawk and walk the walk,” Pete & Gerry’s Organics said on its website.
“Pete & Gerry’s is recognized as a 2022 Best For The World B Corp in the Community impact area, scoring in the top 5% of their size group for their efforts in the community, including charitable giving, investment in diversity, and educational opportunities.”
Committed to sustainable farming practices, the company ensures that its hens are raised without antibiotics, hormones, or synthetic pesticides, and are given access to outdoor pastures to promote their health and well-being.
The theft comes amid a national egg shortage and soaring prices.
In January 2017, as Trump assumed office, the average price for a dozen eggs was approximately $1.32. Throughout his tenure, prices remained relatively steady.
When Joe Biden took office in January 2021, the average price for a dozen Grade A eggs was a modest $1.47. Fast forward to December 2024, and that same dozen now costs a staggering $4.15—a nearly 200% increase, according to the Federal Reserve of St. Louis.
The Biden administration has attempted to deflect blame, citing factors such as avian influenza outbreaks and supply chain disruptions. However, these excuses fall flat when considering the broader context of rampant inflation and economic policies that have devalued the purchasing power of the average American.
