Pope Francis’ Health Situation Was at One Point So Dire That Doctors Contemplated Stopping the Treatment and ‘Letting Him Die in Peace’

Pope Francis very nearly died, we now learn.

Ailing Pope Francis has finally been released from the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where he spent over 5 weeks in a dramatic stint that turned into the greatest health scare of his Papacy.

But now, reports are arising with chilling details of his battle for life.

Doctor Alfieri, head of his medical team revealed yesterday (25) that Francis came to be so close to death at certain point that doctors considered ending his pneumonia treatment so he could just die in peace,

New York Post reported:

“The 88-year-old pope’s most dire moment came on Feb. 28 when he nearly choked on his vomit after being hospitalized for the breathing crisis, according to Sergio Alfieri, a top physician at Rome’s Gemelli hospital.”

Alfieri: “There was a real risk he might not make it. We had to choose if we would stop there and let him go, or to go forward and push it with all the drugs and therapies possible, running the highest risk of damaging his other organs. In the end, we took this path.”

The pontiff was admitted to the hospital on February 14, presenting symptoms of bronchitis. His frail health quickly devolved into double pneumonia — a dangerous condition for someone who, like Francis, had one lung removed as a young man.

“The doctor said it was the pope’s personal nurse, Massimiliano Strappetti, who urged the medical team to keep up the treatment in the wake of the vomiting episode.”

The Pope’s life was saved by his personal nurse.

For days, the medical team risked damage to Francis’ kidneys and bone marrow, but the 88-year-old finally responded to the heavy medication and his infection subsided.

After leaving the hospital, Francis will rest for another two months in order to fully heal.
