Swedish State Media Pushes Citizens to Boycott US Products

Sweden’s left-liberal state broadcaster, Sveriges Television (SVT), appears to be subtly promoting a boycott of American products, using carefully framed interviews and reports to shape public opinion on the matter.

While ostensibly examining Swedish attitudes toward a potential boycott, the network’s coverage repeatedly amplifies one-sided criticism of President Donald Trump and his administration’s reversal of Biden’s globalist, neoconservative foreign policy adventures.

Since Trump’s return to the White House, he and figures like Elon Musk have been actively working to dismantle the policies of Joe Biden’s administration, particularly by enforcing stricter measures against illegal immigration.

SVT’s reporting conveys the impression—accurate or not—that many Swedes view stricter immigration enforcement as excessive, framing Trump’s leadership style, conveyed by the media as dumb and immoral, as a legitimate reason for boycotting American products.

Similarly, Musk’s efforts to reduce government waste and reform inefficient institutions have drawn criticism from parts of the Swedish media.

Swedish state television’s framing focuses heavily on so-called “fundamental values,” with many interviewees offering little more than broad moral condemnations of Trump’s America-first policies.

The prevailing sentiment among those SVT chooses to interview can often be distilled to a simple refrain: “Trump is stupid.” As is typical with liberals and globalists who’ve lost the debate, SVT presents few substantive arguments against Trump’s policies, relying instead on ad hominem attacks.

Instead, the state broadcaster’s coverage implies that refusing to buy American products stance taken by moral people.

A study from Lund School of Economics, reported by SVT, found that 42% of Swedes who purchased Coca-Cola in the past year would consider switching brands—“a remarkable statistic,” according to marketing professor Johan Anselmsson.

SVT reports:

In Canada, where the boycott has gained significant support, an app allows consumers to track the origins of various goods. A similar question was posed in the Swedish survey, asking if people would be interested in such a solution. According to Johan Anselmsson, 63 percent expressed interest in the app, which he describes as a notably high figure.

Earlier this month, SVT reported on a survey by the opinion institute Verian that revealed that 30% of Swedes have already boycotted American products in protest, while 40% are considering following suit.

“Donald Trump’s actions over the past month regarding Ukraine, European security policy, and trade have left a noticeable impact on Swedish public opinion. 3 out of 10 Swedes have reduced their purchases of American goods in political protest, reflecting a widespread skepticism towards the U.S. among the Swedish public,” said Per Söderpalm, a pollster at Verian.

While SVT presents this as an organic shift in consumer behavior, the repeated emphasis on Trump’s unpopularity, immorality, and intelligence suggests a deeper agenda—one that could shape Sweden’s economic relationship with the US moving forward.
