Mel Gibson’s long-awaited sequel to The Passion of the Christ will finally start filming this summer.

Manuela Cacciamani, CEO of Rome’s historic Cinecittà Studios, said in an interview with Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore that The Resurrection Of The Christ will begin filming in August.

“I can confirm that the next film directed by Mel Gibson, produced by Icon Productions, The Resurrection of Christ, will be shot entirely in Cinecittà starting in August and requires many theaters and stage constructions,” she said.

In a recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, Gibson, who was appointed by Trump to be the ‘Special Ambassador‘ to ‘Troubled’ Hollywood, said that the filming would start at some point this year, although they refrained from offering a specific date.

“There’s a lot required because it’s an acid trip. I’ve never read anything like it,” Gibson said of the film’s script, which he wrote alongside his brother and Randall Wallace and took him seven years to complete.

He continued:

My brother and I and Randall all sort of congregated on this. So there’s some good heads put together, but there’s some crazy stuff. And I think in order to really tell the story properly you have to really start with the fall of the angels, which means you’re in another place, you’re in another realm. You need to go to hell. You need to go to Sheol.

It’s about finding the way in that’s not cheesy or too obvious. I think I have ideas about how to do that and how to evoke things and emotions in people from the way you depict it and the way you shoot it. So I’ve been thinking about it for a long time. I

t’s not going to be easy, and it’s going to require a lot of planning and I’m not wholly sure I can pull it off; to tell you the truth, it’s super ambitious. But I’ll take a crack at it because that’s what you’ve got to do, right, walk up to the plate, right?

The Passion of the Christ depicts the final 12 hours of Jesus Christ’s life, from his betrayal in the Garden of Gethsemane to his crucifixion and resurrection.

The film is known for its unflinching portrayal of Jesus’ suffering, emphasizing the brutality of his torture and execution.

It stars Jim Caviezel as Jesus, whose performance captures Christ’s mental and physical agony during his final hours.

The dialogue is also entirely in Aramaic, Latin, and Hebrew, with English subtitles.

The film was a massive commercial success, grossing over $600 million worldwide, and was praised by Christian audiences for its faithfulness to the Gospels and emotional impact.

However, the film also sparked controversy for its unsympathetic portrayal of Jewish authorities and their role in Christ’s crucifixion.

While views on its message may differ, The Passion of the Christ remains one of the most influential religious films ever made.
