Musk Confirms SpaceX Starship Set To Depart to Mars in Late-2026, Carrying Tesla’s Optimus Explorer Robots

At this point in time, most of us are aware of Elon Musk’s dream of taking civilization and human consciousness to Mars in our lifetime.

What we may not be aware is just how soon he expects to be doing it.

Back in March, Musk wrote on X: ‘Starship departs for Mars at the end of next year, carrying Optimus. If those landings go well, then human landings may start as soon as 2029, although 2031 is more likely’.

And today, the tech billionaire confirmed this perspective, adding an unexpected twist: Tesla’s Optimus robots are to be used to explore the surface of Mars in this first trip.

Newsweek reported:

“The humanoid robots, which were initially pitched as household assistants in October last year, will ‘hopefully’ be sent to Mars on a SpaceX flight by the end of 2026.

Getting humanity on Mars has been one of Musk’s long term goals for a while, and his most profitable company, SpaceX, is vital to NASA’s plans to get there. The use of Tesla Optimus robots, which are bipedal and autonomous, shows that Musk is increasing his influence over U.S. space exploration even further.”

Unveiled in October 2024, the Optimus robots were initially marketed as ‘assistants’ capable of performing household chores and basic tasks.

“’It’ll do anything you want’, Musk said at the showcase. ‘It can be a teacher, babysit your kids. It can walk your dog, mow your lawn, get the groceries, just be your friend, serve drinks. Whatever you can think of, it will do’.”

“Musk has repeatedly said that he wants an unmanned flight to Mars carried out by the end of 2026, but today was the first time [that a] reference to the Tesla robots was made.”

“Flight rate will grow exponentially from there, with the goal of building a self-sustaining city in about 20 years.” Musk on X, September 2024.

Elon Musk: It’s not just about visiting Mars. It’s about building a city on Mars.

“I would like to go to Mars, that’s nice to have, but what is important is that we establish a self-sustaining city on Mars.
