George Clooney’s wife Amal Clooney is facing the prospect of a U.S. travel ban.
According to The Financial Times, Clooney may be sanctioned by the Trump administration for her work providing advice to the International Criminal Court (ICC) on prosecuting Israel for crimes against humanity over its handling of the conflict in Gaza.
The report states:
The UK foreign office has warned senior British lawyers they are at risk of sanctions by the Trump administration because of advice they provided to the International Criminal Court on Israel’s conduct in Gaza.
Several senior lawyers involved in the ICC’s war crimes case against Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant have received the warnings from Britain’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, according to people familiar with the matter...
In February, US President Donald Trump issued an executive order imposing sanctions on ICC prosecutor Karim Khan and warning that further measures could follow “on those responsible for the ICC’s transgressions.”
The sanctions include blocking property and assets and the suspension of entry into the US.
The 47-year-old is known for her work as a human rights lawyer and has worked on cases involving political prisoners, war crimes, and press freedom, representing figures like Julian Assange, Nadia Murad, and former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.
However, she is perhaps best known for her marriage to Hollywood star George Clooney, with the pair becoming one of America’s most prominent power couples.
Last year, it was reported that George Clooney had personally called the White House to defend his wife’s working on arrest warrants for members of Israel’s military leadership.
Clooney’s relationship with the Biden administration deteriorated further when he penned an op-ed in The New York Times calling for Joe Biden to step aside, which many argue was a pivotal moment in his decision to drop out of the presidential race.
Earlier this month, it was reported that Clooney had “exploded” on an MSNBC producer after host Mika Brzezinski suggested that Barack Obama was responsible for Clooney publishing his call for Biden to exit the race.
