Democrats have become such humorless scolds that they not only cannot take a joke, let alone recognize one, even when it is staring right at them. One Democrat congressman made an idiot of himself today during an important House hearing.
As The Gateway Pundit reported, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was invited to testify today before the House Financial Services Committee regarding the state of the international finance system. The hearing comes as Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer are set to meet with a high-level Chinese delegation this weekend in Geneva, Switzerland, in the first major talks between the two countries since President Trump rightfully imposed stiff tariffs on Chinese imports.
Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) decided to use his time to try to ‘educate’ Bessent with a so-called history lesson about trade deficits in America, claiming they were not a national emergency. He apparently thinks America’s manufacturing base getting ripped to shreds by unfair trade deals for decades is no big deal.
“For four decades, we have had trade deficits in America, and no one said it was an emergency,” Meeks ranted. “Democratic and Republican presidents…You know what it says to me? It hasn’t been an emergency for four decades!”
“It says to me we should bring US tariffs back to the United States Congress so we can make that determination, as the Constitution has said,” he continued. “And not try to go around Congress. It’s just unbelievable to me!”
Meeks then asked Bessent two questions to enhance his argument and embarrass the Trump Administration.
“Who has been the President since January 2025?” he asked.
After Bessent calmly answered, Meeks then sprung his trap.
“Who was the president in 2024?” he inquired.
But Bessent foiled his plan with a clever joke about Biden.
“One believes President Biden,” he responded with a smile.
Of course, Bessent knows Biden was ‘president’ in 2024. He was saying this to trigger Meeks and to help remind people that Biden was so mentally lost that he may not have been aware that he was in the Oval Office at times.
Upon hearing Bessent’s reply, Meeks freaked out.

“One believes?!” he exclaimed, clearly not getting the joke. “You one of these nonbelievers in that election that the American people didn’t vote (to ‘elect’ Biden).”
“I’am not,” Bessent said while continuing to smile.
“You’re not? You said one believes!” Meeks shouted. “Do you believe in the Constitution of the United States?”
“I believe in the Constitution of the United States,” Bessent replied.
“So you believe in it without ANY SECOND THOUGHT?!” Meeks yelled. “You don’t have to think about it. You believe in it?”
“And you will abide by it. Is that correct?”
“I have and I do, sir,” Bessent answered.
