In a fiery takedown, Virginia Republican gubernatorial candidate Winsome Earle-Sears slammed Democratic Attorney General nominee Jay Jones for his resurfaced 2022 text messages that reveal an obsession with violence against Republicans, including fantasizing about “murdered little children lying lifeless in their mothers’ arms.”
Earle-Sears declared Jones’ comments “wholly disqualifying” for anyone seeking to serve as the state’s top law enforcer, arguing they reflect a deeper rot within the entire Democratic Party.
The scandal erupted when leaked private texts from Jones, a former Virginia House delegate, were published by National Review.
In one shocking exchange, Jones fantasized about putting “two bullets to the head” of then-Republican House Speaker Todd Gilbert in a hypothetical scenario comparing him to dictators like Hitler and Pol Pot.

Jones didn’t stop there; he went even further, expressing a twisted wish that one of Gilbert’s children would die in a school shooting to change Gilbert’s stance on gun control.
“I wish one of his kids would get shot up at school and die. Then maybe he’d change his mind,” Jones wrote, adding grotesque details about imagining the child “lying lifeless in their mother’s arms.”
Earle-Sears didn’t mince words in her response, highlighting how Jones’ messages betray a mindset unfit for public office.
“This is horrible to read and should be wholly disqualifying of someone running for an office that protects the people of Virginia,” she stated.

The conservative firebrand went on to tie Jones’ vitriol to broader Democratic hypocrisy, asking rhetorically, “Try to name a Democrat leader who hasn’t called the president Hitler. Try to name one who hasn’t said Republicans and our policies are an existential threat to democracy.”

Earle-Sears demanded that Jones’ running mate, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger, call for him to drop out of the race, branding Spanberger’s tepid condemnation as insufficient.
Jones, who is challenging incumbent Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares, has issued apologies, calling his words a “grave mistake.”
However, he has defiantly refused to withdraw from the race, insisting the texts were private frustrations from a heated legislative session and do not reflect his character or ability to serve.
In a post on X, Earle-Sears wrote, in no uncertain terms, “Jay Jones can never be Attorney General of Virginia.”
