What’s Turning American Military Warriors Suicidal and Homicidal? – Psychiatric Drugs Never Mentioned

It would be hard to miss the fact that several of the recent shootings involved former military personnel. In fact, an article in the Daily Mail last week reported that “only about seven percent of Americans are veterans but 26 percent of mass shooters over the last decades had military experience…” That’s interesting if not tragic information.

To highlight the fact that veterans are committing increased levels of deadly violence, one can easily recall that in September there was the 40-year-old former Marine who drove his truck into a Mormon church in Grand Blanc, Michigan, killing four and wounding eight and another former Marine, who opened fire from a boat in Southport, North Carolina, killing three and wounding five.

But these are not the first and, unfortunately given the amount of psychiatric drugging occurring among our veterans, probably won’t be the last. The expert in the Daily Mail article, Carl Castro, University of California’s Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work, believes the reason for the increased violence among the nation’s veterans is due to “the emotional, cognitive and financial challenges that veterans face after moving back into the civilian world.” Meh, maybe, but one cannot ignore, which is done all the time, that our veterans are being drugged at rapid speed with cocktails of psychiatric drugs as “treatment” for PTSD and a host of other alleged mental disorders.

What is extremely irritating is that the reporters of these articles never ask the question. What mind-altering drugs had this veteran been prescribed? Why, when it is common knowledge that psychiatric drugs carry extremely dangerous adverse events, does no one make the connection. It certainly can’t be because anyone is unfamiliar with the drugging of the nation’s military personnel and veterans. Nor can one ignore the fact that veterans aren’t just killing others. The nation’s veterans are killing themselves are record numbers.

According to the Department of Defense, in 2022 nearly 6500 veterans died by suicide – an average of 17.6 per day or 34.7 per 100,000 nearly double the rate for civilians. Ironically, the military reflects on reasons for the increase in veteran suicides including “mental and physical health issues: traumatic brain injuries, depression, anxiety, moral injury, and PTSD,” but never mentions the lethal amounts of psychiatric drugs being prescribed.

For example, between 2019 and 2023, there was nearly a 40% increase in psychiatric diagnosing with a peak incident rate of 11,706 cases per 100,000 per year. More than 541,000 service members received a mental health diagnosis during this period. The rates of psychiatric diagnosing available for veterans reveals nearly 1.15 million veterans receiving at least one mental illness diagnosis.

Yes. It sure seems like an awful lot of mental illness diagnosing among the nation’s military warriors. But that’s just where the problems begin. When military personnel are diagnosed the next step is “treatment” which all too often means prescription psychiatric drugs.

Assuming the military personnel receive a diagnosis of depression one would expect an antidepressant to be prescribed. What are the known possible adverse events associated with antidepressants? One might be prescribed Fluoxetine (also known as Prozac) which carries the following known possible adverse events: abnormal dreams, depression, delusions, anxiety, depersonalization, manic reaction, paranoid reaction, psychosis, delusions, hallucinations, panic attacks, hostility and suicidal thoughts and behavior and attempts.

In fact, all the antidepressants on the market today carry the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) most serious Black Box warning for suicidality. Knowing of the FDA warning for suicidality sort of makes it easier to understand the ever-increasing rate of suicide among the nation’s veterans and military personnel.

Too often, and always long after the fact, the nation learns that one of these veteran or military personnel killings was carried out by men who had been “treated” with cocktails of psychiatric drugs. If one antidepressant carries the above known possible adverse events one can only imagine adverse events associated with two or three other drugs.

Then there is always the chance that the killer was misdiagnosed and rather than receive a medical health physical, immediately is taken for a psychiatric review. The case of Lewiston, Maine, killer Robert Card, who killed 18 and wounded 13, had been prescribed psychiatric drugs, when in fact he suffered from a traumatic brain injury.

How often are the diagnoses like Card’s just flat out wrong? How often are mind-altering drugs prescribed without even so much as a cursory medical exam? Oh, it’s easy to see where someone like California School of Social Work, Carl Castro could think the violence is due to lifestyle changes. No one wants to admit that the problem may be much closer to command decisions.

It is the military that has made psychiatric diagnosing and drugging the go-to “treatment” for all the military’s ills, but at the end of the day, our brave warriors are turning violent and suicidal. It’s time to honor and help our warriors heal, not drug them out of their broken minds only to then blame them for what was forced upon them.
