A 24-year-old Honduran national attempting to evade federal immigration authorities was killed after being hit by a passing vehicle on a major interstate in Virginia on Thursday morning.

Josué Castro Rivera, who had been living in the United States illegally for four years, was en route to his gardening job when Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers pulled over his car as part of a targeted operation.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 264 near the Military Highway interchange in Norfolk.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the stop was intelligence-based and aimed at individuals residing here illegally.

Castro Rivera reportedly resisted detention and fled on foot, crossing the highway where he was struck by a 2002 Ford pickup truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Castro Rivera’s brother, Henry Castro, described him as a hardworking individual who sent money back to his family in Honduras and had a “very good heart,” according to a report from the Associated Press.

The brother called the death an “injustice” and is currently fundraising to bring his brother’s remains back to his home nation for a funeral.

“He didn’t deserve everything that happened to him,” he said.

DHS said the death is “a direct result of every politician, activist, and reporter who continues to spread propaganda and misinformation about ICE’s mission and ways to avoid detention.”

The department has not released any additional statements about the incident.

In July, an illegal alien farmworker died after falling from a greenhouse roof during a California ICE raid.

Another illegal alien was struck by a vehicle while fleeing agents on a California freeway in August.

Virginia State Police are investigating the most recent crash, but no charges have been filed against the driver.
